A Challenge For StudentsIt is no secret that many children in America, and even some abroad, do not have a place for their handbook in class. They do not know how to complete the assignment, are afraid to return to the seventh grade until classes end, or would like to retake the AP Lit Exam at their local college or university.There are ways to help these students that are easy to do and can be done at home to help them get ready for the AP Lit Exam. It will require some work on their part, but they can use their own determination and creativity to get ready for the AP Lit Exam.One of the first things to be done is to create a detailed AP reading plan. This includes not only writing the essay, but the writing of individual paragraphs as well. These paragraphs should be at least one page long, with only five sentences per paragraph. The essay should be submitted as a draft, and the deadline for the essay should be a week before the AP Lit Exam.While this is great for preparing student s for the AP Lit Exam, it is also a great option for students wishing to apply to colleges and universities around the country, or even back home in their community college. Students who are academically prepared should take a course in first-year composition. Even students who do not belong to honors programs, and do not intend to take advanced courses, should take this course. This course will give students an introduction to what writing for a newspaper, magazine, or textbook will be like, and will be a great foundation for them.It is also good to get a copy of the AP Lit Exam guide, which is on the official website of the College Board. Some areas are not covered in the guide, and the student may find this helpful. It should include sample essays, and if possible, the essays should be sent out to students.Students who choose to do more than just write essays at the end of the semester, or take the AP Lit Exam, should also look into taking a course in their school on 'writing for a variety of topics.' In addition to teaching them to create a workable essay, this course will teach them how to use effective journalism.When all else fails, get creative. Writing for an individual essay at the end of the semester or the summer may be a challenge, but if the student is motivated and enjoys it, then it can be done, and then taken to college and university.
